Effluent from the pharmaceutical industry contains process residues and waste, spent catalyst, off specification products, spent organic solvents, date expired, discarded products. This effluent has high pH, COD, TSS. Therefore it is necessary for Effluent Treatment Plants to maintain their COD and other parameters of their effluent to meet specifications decided by regulatory board.

For the purpose of treating this effluent, Evaporation and Drying methods are used. A combination of Industrial Evaporators like Flash Evaporator, Falling film Evaporator, Forced Circulation Evaporator and the Industrial Dryers like Agitated Thin Film Dryer, Fluid Bed Dryer etc are used. Other auxiliary techniques such as centrifuging, filtration, incineration are also employed. But the condensate water generated after condensation of the vapours formed in evaporation process of this particular effluent tends to carry the volatile organic compounds thereby increasing the COD of condensate water and making it unfit for use/disposal. The COD of the condensate water can be brought down by rectification/ carbon treatment or aeration with a high pressure blower for prolonged periods. The effluent containing high amount of organics is preheated and then high heated using steam as heating media and then it enters into flashing chamber where due to flash evaporation, the maximum quantity of low boiling organics leave the effluent stream and their vapours are condensed into a condenser. This condensed vapours can be incinerated in an incinerator for making the facility a complete zero pollution plant. The output liquid stream from the flashing chamber enters the multiple effect falling film evaporator for further concentration. After concentration in the falling film evaporator, we get a concentrated stream of effluent which can be then further concentrated or dried in different types of evaporators and dryers depending upon the actual composition of the individual stream. Finally, whole of the effluent is converted into solid/sludge form so that it can be disposed using various ways like land filling. The characteristics of discharge effluent vary, depending on the product manufactured, the materials used in the process, and the other process details. The typical characteristics of discharge effluent for chemical industries (indicative molasses based spent wash) are listed in the table below:

The applications of HyCator® reactor at effluent treatment plant are listed below

  1. HyCator® MBD will increase digestibility of the effluent in UASB digestor and aerator by breaking long-chain / polymeric/ refractory compounds and thus reduce the COD and increase the Biogas production. HyCator® MBD can also be installed in the inlet effluent streams (High load) / neutralization tank or recycle stream of effluent, if any.
  2. HyCator® OLM will ensures energy efficient, precise, microlevel, online mixing even at very high flows. It will help to reduce the chemicals in neutralization and subsequent processes.
  3. HyCator® DOB will increase the dissolved oxygen content in aerator tanks in compared to conventional surface aerator or diffused aerator and also increase the activity of microbes by de-flocking it. Thus results in reduction in sludge generation, hence lesser load on clarifiers and less solid disposal issues.
