The major pollutants are amongst ammonia, urea, phosphates, methanol, fluorides, oil, cyanides, metals like vanadium, nickel, arsenic and chromium depending upon the type of feedstock and product of the plant. The wastewater generated are in large quantities as large quantities of water is used for the processes, steam production and cooling. The effluent from Fertilizer industry contains pH, high BOD, high COD, TDS, TSS .Therefore it is a big challenge for Effluent Treatment Plants to maintain their COD and other parameters of their effluent to meet specifications decided by regulatory board. In most of the cases the effluent composition keep changing (if some reaction takes place in holding tank or effluents from new plants enter in the existing stream). To treat such effluents, Industries have to spend huge amounts. The effluent of fertilizer industry is treated in two major steps. These are Aeration (nitrification) and Denitrification. Nitrification is the biological oxidation of ammonia with oxygen into nitrite followed with the oxidation of these nitrites into nitrates. The first step is done by bacteria of the genus Nitrosomonas. The second step is mainly done by bacteria of the genus Nitrobacter. All organisms are autotrophs, which mean that they take carbon dioxide as their carbon source for growth. Denitrification is the biological reduction of nitrate to nitrous oxide and nitrogen gas. Biological Denitrification is an integral part of biological nitrogen removal, which involves both nitrification and denitrification. The characteristics of discharge effluent vary, depending on the product manufactured, the materials used in the process, and the other process details. The typical characteristics of discharge effluent for fertilizer industries (indicative molasses based spent wash) are listed in the table below

Problems in ETP:

  • High temperature of the wastewaters may instantaneously kill fish and other aquatic organisms, thus destroying the flora and fauna of a river, when the wastewaters are discharged into it
  • More chemical usage for neutralization
  • High concentration of readily decomposable organic matters
  • Foul smell due to decomposition of soluble and suspended organic matters present in the waste waters
  • Low yield of biogas due to byproducts

HyCator® Reactor Systems for Fertilizer Industry

We generally suggest HyCator® reactor systems to effluent treatment plants in the following manners but it varies as per the client requirements and limitations.

The applications of HyCator® reactor at effluent treatment plant are listed below:

  1. HyCator® MBD increases the digestibility of the effluent in UASB digestor and aerator by breaking long-chain / polymeric/ refractory compounds and thus, reduce the COD and increase the Biogas production. HyCator® MBD can also be installed in the inlet effluent streams (High load) / neutralization tank or recycle stream of effluent, if any.
  2. HyCator® OLM ensures the energy efficient, precise, microlevel, online mixing even at very high flows. It will help to reduce the chemicals in neutralization and subsequent processes.
  3. HyCator® DOB increases the dissolved oxygen content in aerator tanks as compared to conventional surface aerator or diffused aerator and also, increases the activity of microbes by de-flocking them. Thus results in reduction in sludge generation, hence, very less load on clarifiers and less solid disposal issues.
